Supplying Europe with Renewable Power: The POINT OF NO RETURN has been Passed

Magazine Article

New Delhi, 2012

ABSTRACT / The article argues that Europe has passed the “point of no return” toward a renewable power future, driven by rapid cost declines in photovoltaics and wind, growing competitiveness, and strong regional initiatives. While the financial crisis slowed some national transitions and political disputes persist, renewables already supply over 20–25% of electricity in leading countries, profoundly changing grid structures and market roles. Key challenges include integrating fluctuating generation through flexibility measures, adapting tariff and market designs, and balancing centralised and decentralised systems. Municipalities and regions are emerging as key actors, signalling an irreversible shift toward a low-carbon energy economy.
