Sustainable District Logistics: A Theoretical framework for understanding a new paradigm

Report

Firenze, 2004

ABSTRACT / The paper, which was developed in the framework of INNESTO, an EU research project coordinated by Filippo Strati, introduces a theoretical framework for sustainable district logistics, aiming to integrate environmental, economic, and social objectives in urban freight transport. It highlights the limitations of current city logistics models, which often focus narrowly on efficiency and cost reduction, neglecting broader sustainability goals. The proposed paradigm emphasises local stakeholder cooperation, multimodal solutions, reduced environmental impacts, and the use of digital technologies for optimisation. By embedding logistics planning within district-level governance and urban development strategies, the framework seeks to create resilient, low-emission, and socially inclusive logistics systems that support both economic vitality and quality of life in cities.
