Between 2008 and 2012, before the German government drastically reduced its support for photovoltaics, the German Ministry of Economic Affairs ran programmes worldwide to promote renewable energy, especially photovoltaics. An essential part of these programmes was conferences organized together with the German Chambers of Commerce Abroad and local partners, where technological, commercial, and policy prospects were discussed, and where German and local SMEs also had the opportunity to present themselves. I had the opportunity to participate in such conferences in 20 countries, giving introductory keynotes and discussing with business leaders and key policymakers. I also participated in a special format to discuss policy options and strategies with government officials in a variety of countries interested in learning more about German and European experiences.
